Around 3 years ago, I went to the doctor for a check up. I was right around 250lbs, very out of shape and the doctor was wanting to put me on blood pressure meds! Well, no way I was going to start taking meds for something that I knew could be fixed with diet and exercise. I started with changing my diet and eating better foods. Not Paleo but it was better than the almost daily Mickey D’s I’d been eating previously. A close friend of mine had just gotten his CF Level 1 certification and asked if I would be his “guinea pig” so he could get some experience training people in CrossFit. I was all for it.
When I first joined the gym, I had been doing CrossFit for a few months out of my buddy’s garage. Our schedules weren’t working out for us to continue that any longer and he brought me down to CFEV since he knew the owners. This was even before Jessica Law (JLaw) was a trainer there!
I’ve been a member at CF East Village for just about 2 1/2 years now I think. I was one of the “early birds” and signed up about a month after the box opened. Back then, the free Saturday workouts were being held at Petco Park, in the actual park area behind the score board. Had allot of fun doing WODs there!
Well, I was still out of shape but I quickly started getting better and better with great coaching from the CFEV crew. When I started at CFEV, I could only manage about 2 pull-ups (dead hang even, didn’t know how to kip yet) and was still struggling with the basic Oly movements that are fundamental to CrossFit. Jlaw, Grant and Jake got me straightened out and soon I was doing much better with the WODs. Pretty much a similar story to many of the current members that have been around for a while now.
Eventually I got to the point that I wanted to start doing something different from the programmed WODs and expand my workouts, taking advantage of the open gym. CFEV is just about the only gym I know of that has an open gym policy by the way. Not just in San Diego but anywhere. One of the many qualities that makes CFEV so unique.
I started training with some of the close friends that I had made at the box and started seeing real improvements. Then we did Fran, which for me was my first time. Took me around 6:30 to complete that first time!
Since then, with great friends to train with and guidance from the CFEV trainers when needed, I have dropped my Fran down to a PR of 4:21. I’ve competed in 2 local CrossFit competitions, the Next Level Invitational series (I think there is a poster in the box about that series) and most recently a powerlifting competition. I may not have done very well but if you look at where I was about 3 years ago, that is huge! I’ve also completed my Level 1 CrossFit trainer certification. I’m at a steady 214lbs now and it’s more muscle than fat. Not too bad for a 43 year old guy!
I’ve made some great and lasting friends here at CFEV and hopefully more to come. CFEV and CrossFit have changed my life and the way I live it. This is a lasting change and something that I will never give up.
