Q. What is CrossFit
A. CrossFit is an extremely efficient and effective way to get into world-class shape. CrossFit is the principal strength and conditioning program for many police academies and tactical operations teams, military special operations units, champion martial artists, and hundreds of other elite and professional athletes worldwide. Our program delivers fitness that is, by design, broad, general, and inclusive. Our specialty is not specializing. Combat, survival, many sports, and life reward this kind of fitness and, on average, punish the specialist.
The CrossFit program is designed for universal scalability, making it the perfect application for any committed individual regardless of experience. We use the same routines for elderly individuals with heart disease and cage fighters one month away from televised bouts. We scale load and intensity; we do not change programs. The needs of Olympic athletes and our grandparents differ by degree, not kind. Our terrorist hunters, skiers, mountain-bike riders, and housewives find their best fitness in the same regimen.
Thousands of athletes worldwide follow our workouts posted daily on this site and distinguish themselves in combat, the streets, the ring, stadiums, gyms, and homes. We also publish the CrossFit Journal, designed to support the CrossFit community and the theory and technique practiced by coaches in our gym, essentially bringing your garage or gym into ours, making you a part of the CrossFit family.

Q. Do I need experience or some minimum level of fitness?
A. No. Our workouts and exercises can be scaled to any fitness level.
Q. I have/had an injury. Can I still do CrossFit?
A. Many people successfully use CrossFit to rehabilitate from minor injuries. Because people continue to move, work, and play in the real world, regardless of injury/history, we believe that the best route to long-term health is to learn perfect form on functional movements, then to slowly build strength in those movements, rather than to avoid them altogether. At the same time, our instructors will happily work with you to scale and substitute exercises and to tailor workouts to your abilities. Regarding injuries, we cannot offer medical advice, and we advise you to consult your physician before starting any new exercise program.
Q. How do I start?
A. Get a taste of CrossFit-style workouts during one of our FREE Saturday classes, held each Saturday at 10 and 11 a.m.
Q. Is there a free beginners’ class?
A. Yes. We offer the above-mentioned FREE beginners’ classes on Saturdays at 10am and 11am. The free workouts offer an opportunity for friends, family, and co-workers to give CrossFit a try and enjoy the best hour of their day together. We pride ourselves in building a strong community, encouraging and pushing each other to strive for new personal bests.
Q. CrossFit East Village looks great; how do I join as a member?
A. You can begin your CrossFit voyage by joining our three-class CrossFit Foundations Program. If you are experienced, you can test into our regular CrossFit WODs or our Competition Team (ask for details).
Q. Can I observe before participating?
A. Yes. Just give us a call or stop by during business hours to see for yourself what CrossFit East Village is about.
Q. I am really fit and would like to skip the Foundations Classes and come to the Workout of the Day (WOD) class; can I do that?
A. Yes. While we do not allow drop-ins to regular CrossFit WOD classes until demonstrating proficiency in the fundamental movements, we welcome experienced CrossFitters to test out or demonstrate active membership at another CrossFit facility. Even if you have not tested into the Regular WOD class, you can become a member and have access to our open gym during business hours.
Q. Will CrossFit make me bulky?
A. No. Body composition changes based on complex effects of genetics, nutrition, exercise, and rest, among other prominent factors. At CrossFit East Village, we will help you design a workout program that meets your fitness and image goals. As a general rule, most people who stick with CrossFit for at least six months realize tremendous losses of body fat and a leaner, fitter physique.
Q. I am visiting San Diego and belong to another CrossFit gym: Can I participate in a WOD class?
A. Yes. We welcome CrossFitters from around the world. As mentioned above, we welcome experienced CrossFitters to test out or demonstrate active membership at another CrossFit facility.
Q. How much do CrossFit Foundations classes cost?
A. Rates vary, based on seasonal specials; however, the Foundations package generally costs $150, $50 for each of the three classes taught in a very small-group environment with one of our experienced trainers.
Q. What does the CrossFit Foundations three-class series cover?
A. CrossFit East Village’s Foundations Classes teach basic gymnastic and weightlifting movements required for Regular CrossFit WODs, explain CrossFit philosophy and history, introduce sound nutritional concepts, and emphasize basic principles of program development and training methods.
Q. What if I do not want to join CrossFit East Village, but prefer to working with one of your trainers one-on-one?
That is totally fine! Inquire at the front desk, and you can schedule personal training with your trainer of choice.
Q. Do you take credit cards, cash, and personal checks?
A. Yes. We accept all forms of payment.
Q. Can I have a receipt?
A. Yes. We offer receipts for all transactions, printed, emailed, or both.
Q. Do you offer discounted membership for active military, police, and firefighters?
A. Absolutely. We offer a 20% discount on all memberships for those who serve the rest of us.
Q. Do you sell t-shirts?
A. Not currently, hopefully soon!
Q. Do you have showers?
A. Yes we do! We have fully equipped men’s and women’s locker rooms, including two showers in each room. We also have four other standalone bathrooms and lots of room for changing and gear storage.
Q. Can I just come to CrossFit East Village to work out on my own?
A. Yes. We offer open gym from 6am to 9:00 pm M-F, 9-2 Saturday, and 10-2 Sunday for members and drop-ins. We also offer classes and one-on-one sessions, in which people work out under a trainer’s supervision, yielding better, safer, and faster results.
